This past weekend, the Oscars hosted their 98th award ceremony and awarded actors like Michael B. Jordan and Jessie Buckley for their performances, and movies like Sinners and One Battle After Another for their productions.
The Oscars were filled with new iconic moments, including giving Leonardo DiCaprio a moment to debut a new meme, and Ryan Coogler being applauded for carrying a winner’s kid up towards the stage so they could hear their mom win Best Cinematography.
“The Sinners’ performance was my favorite part, specifically when they brought out all the dancers,” Alejandra Guzman said.
In the weeks before the show, people were debating who should win Best Leading Actor as the race was solely between Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet, but Chalamet was caught in hot water when he made a comment that offended the arts community about how no one cares for opera and ballet anymore. Many believed this may have weakened his chances of winning, as the Academy might take offense.
“I think it is stupid that people are getting so mad. His whole point is a criticism of the idea that this generation is not engaging in these arts. People keep saying that movies are falling due to short attention spans, but instead, it’s an art form that has barely evolved in twenty years. Everyone is sick of the same five movies over and over. And as someone who likes ballet, it is a dying art because it has not evolved, and most of the people who are getting mad do not even go to the ballet,” Guzman said.
A new host for next year’s show was also announced in a comedic skit played at the end of the show, which involved Conan being locked in a room to prevent him from hosting again. His name plate was then replaced by a plate named “Mr. Beast.” Mr. Beast is a famous YouTuber known for his challenge videos, which always end with him giving away thousands of dollars to participants. The choice to let him host The Oscars last year is bringing out various opinions.
“I think he will be a good host, I feel like he could be awkward, he hosts game shows, not award ceremonies, so he might not fit the vibe or the mood,” Stephanie Adeoshun said.
