Three Obra D. Tompkins High School students—Bani Patel, Swadhinta Amarnath, and Janalle Omonzejele—are spearheading an innovative HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) campaign aimed at raising awareness about processed foods and misleading nutritional labels.
The group has developed the campaign to address growing concerns about processed food consumption and misleading nutritional labels. The team has been conducting hands-on outreach at local grocery stores, where they help shoppers navigate food labels and identify healthier alternatives.
The campaign has already reached many people through its social media presence on its Instagram account, @ReadBetweenTheLabels, which features educational infographics and video content about hidden sugars and unhealthy fats in processed foods.
Their efforts extend beyond social media. Team members distribute educational materials throughout the community, focusing on practical advice that empowers individuals to make healthier food choices.
“We’re not just sharing information – we’re starting conversations about food transparency that need to happen,” Omonzejele said.
Through their food campaign, they are able to help students and people of the community feel informed about what they are putting in their bodies. Also, this will bring awareness to the community about unhealthy foods and lifestyles that can negatively affect them in the future.
Patel emphasizes the campaign’s focus on practical education.”When we help someone understand what’s really in their food, we’re potentially improving their family’s health for years to come,” Patel said.
The HOSA campaign emphasizes the importance of both physical and mental well-being, encouraging families to prioritize nutritious eating habits. With their initiative, the students hope to inspire others to take a closer look at what they consume and adopt healthier lifestyles.
The group hopes that their healthier food campaign encourages students to read between the labels.
