On Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, Ariana Grande released her 4th studio album, sweetener. The album has a few feature, Pharrell, Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliot being the lucky few. This allows Grande’s mature and refined voice to be the star of the show.
The album features tracks about her new fiance, comedian Pete Davidson, including a track named ‘pete davidson’. She does not hide anything when it comes to their relationship and her lyrics reflect that attitude. The album’s namesake, ‘sweetener’ is about how Davidson is the sweetener that makes her life better.
Grande’s vocals are the best they have ever been, as demonstrated in the acapella intro ‘raindrops (an angel cried)’ and ‘breathin’. She demonstrates impressive vocal control, especially on sweetener.
The album’s overall sound offers a very whimsical and airy feel as opposed to some of the heavier sounds of Dangerous Woman. Even the album art is much brighter in color and design than her previous releases. Many speculate that this newfound airyness is due to her engagement to Davidson. Both Grande and Davidson claim they have never been happier.
sweetener has been a hit on the charts as well as with other celebrities. It has been the number one album on the Billboard 200 charts since it came out. Tyler, the Creator took to twitter days after the album’s release to show his appreciation for ‘R.E.M.” Grande admitted this song was her favorite as well.
sweetener is available on all streaming platforms including Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal. It is also available for purchase in the iTunes store and as a physical copy on Grande’s website.
