Forget the fancy dinners and impulsive trips to Vegas! Cozy up with your significant other on the couch with chocolates and a classic romantic movie. Unsure of your viewing pleasure? Here’s some flicks that set the mood and remind couples why they fell in love in the first place:
Shrek (2001)
The best love stories are animated ones… Right? Once upon a time, Shrek, an ogre who loves the solitude in his swamp, finds his life interrupted by annoying fairytale characters. The fairytale characters have been exiled from their homeland by the fairy-tale hating Lord Farquaad, but Shrek decides to ask the Lord to take back the characters. Upon Shrek’s journey, the viewers learn of Fiona, a princess that has been locked in a castle for years. Because of a curse, Fiona turns into an ogre at sunset and believes a kiss from Lord Farquaad will keep her human forever. Fiona is rescued by Shrek, and though she wants a kiss from the Lord, she falls in love with Shrek.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Not into comedies? Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), aka Spider-Man, is trying to sort out his life as a super natural human being and feelings for his first crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). He discovers a briefcase that once belonged to his father, the one that abandon him, and he begins to question his parent’s disappearance. His curiosity leads him into the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s ex-lab partner, and Connor’s alter ego, The Lizard, that will cause Peter to make life-altering choices concerning his crush and duty as a superhero.
Titanic (1997)
No, this isn’t a documentary about the British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. Titanic combines the perfect amount of action and romance on the ill-fated voyage. An unhappy and troubled young women, Rose (Kate Winslet) is engaged to a millionaire her mother sought out. Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) saves Rose from falling off the ship’s stern, and it seems he’s the only one that recognizes Rose’s anguish, a factor that brings the two star-crossed lovers together.
When in Rome (2010)
The main character Beth (Kristen Bell) is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is unlucky in the love department. On a whirlwind trip to Rome, she steals some coins from the ‘fountain of love’ and suddenly finds herself pursued by an assortment of men under a love spell. The movie is light-hearted and sure to have couples laughing on the floor.
50 First Dates (2004)
Casanova Henry (Adam Sandler) falls in love with Lucy (Drew Barrymore), but there’s a twist. Lucy has short term memory loss and can’t remember the events of the day before. Lucy’s friends and family go to great lengths to protect her, and Henry must convince them his love is real.
500 Days of Summer (2009)
Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) reflects on his failed relationship with Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), his boss’s new assistant. Tom and Summer work at a greeting card company, where one of Toms’ friends reveals that Tom has a crush on Summer. Despite the passion brewing between the two, Summer reveals she doesn’t believe in true love and doesn’t want a boyfriend. This revelation causes a rift between the two and ultimately ends their relationship, but the love story that unfolds can’t help but make couples reminisce about their own.
