Tompkins Soccer Battles in Playoffs

Tompkins girls’ and boys’ soccer participated in the first two rounds of the state playoffs. Both teams were victorious in each of their first two playoff games. The boys won 4-1 in the first round against Kempner and 2-1 in the second round against Cy Ridge. The girls won 7-0 in the first round against Fort Bend Austin and came away with a 3-0 second round win over Bellaire.

Both teams then came away with a third victory advancing to the regional tournament. The boys defeated Cy Ranch 3-1 and the girls came away with a 2-0 overtime win against Cy Woods. The boys will be playing Alief Elsik at 5:30 pm and the girls will be playing Kingwood at 2:30 pm on Friday. Both games are going to be played at Abshier Stadium in Deer Park.

“To play our style of game, our coach and others have said that they have seen that we have the potential to be the best in state. If we stay consistent through playoffs no doubt I feel we could make it far,” said junior Pablo Garcia.

Going into every game the team has to have their minds focused on winning. They have to stay concentrated the whole time and not let off the gas at any second. Keeping the goal in mind, the team can play with all they have to come out on top.

“We have many goals as a team, but the main focus is to go to state and stay consistent each round,” said Garcia.

The girls are out for redemption in this year’s playoff. Finishing second place in the championship game put a sour taste in the team’s mouth. This year they are steam rolling into the playoffs coming off of a hot regular season.

“After being state runner ups, our goal this year is to be state champions. Making the champion was something to be proud of and now that we know we can make it that far we want to win it all.  We will do whatever we can to make it happen,” said junior Carrie Gerdes.

The soccer program has accomplished something unique. Both teams have advanced to the third round of the playoffs. Now they are both one step closer to being state champions.

“Having both the girls and the boys making a run in the playoffs is something special. Not often does a school have both girls’ and boys’ soccer make a legit run for the title,” said Gerdes.
