Friday, March 24, Girls Soccer faced off against the Kempner Cougars in the Bi-District Playoffs championship game. After coming out strong with a 5-0 lead, the game was abruptly canceled due to lighting causing everyone to leave the game. The game was postponed until the next morning Saturday, March 25 where the Falcons closed out the game scoring three more goals. The Lady Falcons came away with an outstanding 8-0 victory scoring four goals in each half. The girls moved on to play Cy-Fair in the area playoffs, Friday, March 31.
“The team’s main objective during the playoffs is to make the regional tournament and see how far we can go,” said, junior Leanna Veary.
It is unfortunate that the game had to be cancelled due to Mother Nature. It can mess with a team’s mindset and cause them to lose focus on the task at hand. Often in sports teams lose focus because of one event and it causes them lose focus or “let off the gas.” Teams go one and blow 3-1 series leads or give up giant score leads that was not the case for the Tompkins Falcons.
“The weather delay had little to no effect on us. We stayed focus and did our job. We were able to come out on top with a big victory. The mindset we had in that is the same we are going to have throughout the playoffs,” said Veary.
No one ever expects large scores in a soccer game so when a team scores eight goals it is quite amazing. Winning 8-0 can give the confidence and momentum to go far in the playoffs.
“Winnning 8-0 is very fun and exciting. The entire team was cheerful and pumped up about how the game turned out. I really hop we can carry those feelings into the next game,” said Veary.
The Lady Falcons would go on to Friday in a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Cy-Fair. The girls move on to play Seven Lakes April 4, at Rhodes Stadium.
