The swimmers poise their bodies and keenly listen for the sound of the timer starting to get the perfect start into the water. They clear their minds of all distractions and focus on only one objective. Swim as fast as they can. The time starts and they lunge into the pool with determination to come out on top.

“All the technique work we did over the season really helped us achieve this result,” junior Reed McKinney said.

The Tompkins swim team achieved stellar results at the district swim meet held at Don Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land, Texas. The boys came out with a third place podium finish while the girls earned a superb fourth place overall. In the process, the girls beat  Seven Lakes High School for the first time in school history, and the boys beat Taylor High School, Katy High School and Strake High School at the District level for the first time in school history. In addition, the team not only beat its initial goal to reset all the previous school records, which they accomplished before districts, but reset the entire board again at districts.

“I was really happy with all my events but mostly with my 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle,” McKinney said. “I was really tired after the races but all that was going through my mind was ‘I did it’.”

The 3 boys and 3 girls relays are also through to regionals as well as the 8 swimmers that will be competing individually. The total 17 swimmers that made regionals this year is almost more than the number of swimmers on the varsity team. These are the swimmers that placed in the top eight and those marked with a ** have made it through District and are swimming individually in Regionals:
