Homecoming is a school event that students look forward to every year. It is the only time that students get to dress formally and go out to dinner and dance with their friends for a night to remember. Unfortunately, due to new policies being enforced from the coronavirus, the school dance was cancelled this year. Despite this inconvenience, students still dressed up and went out to take pictures and have fun. 

“It was disappointing because we had to social distance, but we were still able to dance and have fun,” said senior Laura Orgeron.

The dances are usually held inside the school on Saturday nights, and have different themes each year. It is usually filled with hundreds of students dancing in the cafeteria, or hanging out in the rotunda and hallways. Even though the school dance was cancelled, students still participated in spirit week and the traditional mums.

“It’s so fun to dress up for spirit week, my favorite was the western day because I got to wear my boots,” said Orgeron.

Seniors Laura Orgeron and Colby Huerter won Homecoming queen and king this year. They were crowned in the football field of Legacy stadium, and got to be cheered on by their classmates and peers in the bleachers who voted for them.

“I was really honored. It means people have respect for me and don’t think I’m mean, so it’s really refreshing to know that,” said Orgeron. “It feels really good to be able to represent the class.”

Ticket sales were limited to the game as they are every year, so not everyone could attend, but the stadium was still crowded with Katy and Tompkins students and staff. Everyone was social distancing.

“Everyone had to wear a mask, and we weren’t able to have food and drinks in the conference room at Legacy for the Homecoming court and their families due to Covid,” said Assistant Principal Heather Campbell.

If social distancing is enforced and people keep wearing masks, hopefully a Homecoming dance will be held next year. But until then, students and staff have to be patient under these new circumstances.

“I look forward to Homecoming because I get to enjoy being around my friends and have a good time,” said Orgeron. “I’ve been all three years except for this one’s.”
