In softball, players hit a 6-7 ounce ball while baseball hits a 5 ounce one. This difference is what first comes to mind when both are being compared, though many more also exist between the sports. The bases in baseball are 90 feet apart, whereas in softball, they are only 60 feet apart, making each play faster and requiring faster reaction times.
“Baseball to me is a lot slower. Softball is very fast-paced and baseball is just longer. I feel like softball is more rapid. It moves a lot quicker than baseball does,” softball player Kaylee Segura said.
Because of these differences, simple changes like ball size and distance between bases can impact how the game is fundamentally played. Techniques, plays, and strategies are all different when comparing the two sports even if they are structurally similar.
“Pitching wise, they come in at different angles, so then your swing has to be different, and there’s a lot more than you can do in baseball. I’m a slapper, but you don’t see slapping in baseball because it’s just not as common. It’s not a thing in baseball,” Senior softball player Peyton Ebel said.
Baseball, while statistically slower, poses its own challenges as well. Because its field is significantly larger, it requires greater power, endurance, and technicality for throwing farther distances as opposed to softball.
“I go to the gym every day. The gym definitely helps, just like in the physical aspect of it. And diet too for sure. Just eating good food and all that kind of stuff,” Junior baseball player Daniel Flemming said
While different, both baseball and softball are challenging sports that test a player’s endurance and mental focus throughout the game. Both players have to be constantly focused throughout the whole game that can last anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
“It’s more of a mental sport because you fail more times than you succeed, and you have to have a hard head to be locked in all the time,” Flemming said.
With both sports, acceptance with failure is also very important because they require you to do something as difficult as pitching at such high speeds constantly. Due to this, there is a very high failure rate which pushes players to develop a strong mental fortitude along with the technique and strength needed to compete at that level.
“Softball is one of the hardest sports mentally. You see a lot of failure and it’s hard to be very successful at it, so it’s definitely a mental game,” Ebel said.
Though they impose many difficulties, both softball and baseball continue to shape the lives of those who play it through important lessons and challenges.
“It’s impacted by teaching me a lot of lessons of failure and just a lot of important characteristics as a person,” Senior Nicolas Piazza said.
